Just came back from the launch. Went down to the iPhone launch at Singtel Comcentre with my reservation letter at Midnight. There was a party and a countdown, even fireworks! There was like over a thousand people queueing and I was last in line! Its gonna take a few hours to clear the queue. Decided to go home and book another time slot. Quite a lot of people were frustrated with Singtel. Why make customers reserve the phones and still have to queue.

JVC CD PORTABLE SYSTEM (MADE FOR IPOD) RD-HA3B. The retail price is SGD$499 but I got it cheap and brand new for SGD$149!
Not really portable cos its big and heavy. 7.5kg heavy. It also requires 10 'D' batteries, so you might want to look for a power socket or you gonna waste a lot of money on batts.
On the upside, the bass and strong and sound quality is good. "Made for the iPod" means that you can control song selection and volume of your ipod using the supplied remote control once the ipod is connected to the provided USB cable/Dock cable.
The provided dock is just a piece of plastic to prevent your ipod from moving around. Would have preferred that it was integrated into the system itself, there is no lack of space.
The RD-HA3 is a boombox featuring:

Singtel-Nets Mobile Payment trial using the Nokia 6131 NFC
I was selected to try out the Singtel-Nets Mobile Payment trial using the Nokia 6131 NFC (Near field Communications) mobile phone. It was held yesterday at the Ang Mo Kio Hub from 2pm to 5pm.
There was a long queue when we arrived about 2.20pm because the demo area was small and we had to wait for the staff to explain how the system works. Refreshments were provided.
We get to use the phone for 6 months free and get to keep it if we do 2 nets transactions per week. We were told that there are 500 shops that have the mNets facility in Singapore. The phone line also comes with 100min of free talk time, 500 free sms and free incoming calls.
The phone works like a cash card. You first have to top up the stored cash value by connecting to the service using GPRS. The menus are in the phone. For this trial, the top up is done using the UOB-Singtel credit card. Minimum top-up value is $20.
You can also download discount vouchers to your phone. We were given 2 free Begawan Solo 'kuehs' voucher a few discount vouchers. To download the vouchers, you need to put the phone near a cardboard voucher the size of a credit card. This can be found at the shops itself but there were a few at the reception area for us to test.
We tried out the voucher at Begawan Solo. You need to log on with you pin on the phone and go through several menus to look for the voucher before you can use it. This took some time and its not convenient. But since its in your phone, you won't forget to bring it along and you don't have to carry around a stack of vouchers.

Nintendo Wii and Wii fit
Got the Wii fit about 3 weeks ago for SGD$179. It was out of stock and I had to pre-order and wait for a week. Out of stock again 3 days after I bought it. In high demand all over the world.
The wireless wii fit board is pressure sensitive and can measure the differences in pressures when you move your body to left/right, front and back. Can actually make you lose weight!

Shinco GM 350S GPS Navigation system
Bought this Shinco GPS from Audio house for a low price of SGD$199 (usual price SGD$399). It uses the Sirf Star III chipset which makes locking your position fast. Takes about a minute.
I'm using a 2gb sd card to play movies and mp3 on it. 3.5" LCD produces good picture quality. Unlike movie playback on my iphone, I don't have to convert AVI to MP4.
A minor problem is that the time cannot be set, it adjusts to the correct time when connected to GPS. When not connected, it goes back to the wrong time.
Comes with lots of accessories but the USB drivers are not included. You need to download ->

Microsoft Xbox 360 HD DVD drive
Ok, HD DVD lost the high definition format war to Blu-ray. The good thing is that I got this HD DVD drive at a very cheap price (cheaper than the SGD$69.90 retail price) and it comes with the SGD$49.90 remote. Its was cheaper than buying one Blu-ray disc! Couldn't resist.
A cheap way to test the HD DVD quality on my 42" Philips and 37" Palladine LCD tvs although they only go up to 1080i and not full HD 1080p.
Fantastic picture and sound quality! What they say is true, once you watch a HD DVD, normal DVDs look awful. I bought 6 HD DVD titles each for the price of a normal DVD.
Only problem now is getting new titles.

Microsoft XBOX 360 Microsoft Media Center Extender
Finally managed to connect my Xbox 360 to Acer PC using a the Media Center Extender (MCE) in Vista. You have to let MCE bypass the firewall. I'm using Norton's firewall and you have to do the settings from Norton's Protection Center.
The problem is that with wireless network access, the response time of the Xbox 360 is slow. Movie playback is sometimes choppy and you CANNOT playback AVI and DIVX files through the MCE without some tedious setup that can be found on the net.
The funny thing is that you can playback AVI and Divx files from your usb thumbdrive and from a DVD inserted into the xbox 360 itself. Not sure why Microsoft did not enable this on MCE, shouldn't be too difficult.

22" Philips 220WS monitor
Had to buy a separate 22" Philips 220WS monitor at SGD$359 from Courts. Response time is 5ms and max resolution is 1650 x 1050. Colours looks bright and text are sharp. It looks plain and you cannot adjust the height but the price is good.
Acer Aspire Core 2 Duo 2.2ghz, 2gb ram, ATI Radeon X1600 256mb ram
Got my self an Acer Aspire M5600 Intel E4500 core 2 duo 2.2ghz, 320gb hard disk, DVDRW, 2gb ram. Real world performance is much faster than my Sony Vaio.
Windows Vista Premium works smoothly and its much cheaper than and Imac. Bought it with Harvey Norman's extended 3 years warranty for over SGD$600 without monitor.

PC Show 2008 Singapore
Went to the PC show yesterday. Was looking for speakers and Wii fit.
Only Creative had a booth there, no other speaker brands. There was no discount on the Wii fit so I didn't get it. Price is at least $179 everywhere in Singapore.
Not much freebies too. I went up to the stage to answer a question from Sony but only received a lousing plastic fan!

Apple Imac 17" LCD defects, dead colourful lines!
I have had a couple of iMacs with LCDs that gets defective after the 1st year warranty is over. Apple is ignoring the hardware quality problem. Go to this online petition to get Apple to do something-> http://www.petitiononline.com/maclines/petition.html

Iphone cheat on Ebay
I ordered an iphone for $525 from an ebay seller (jose32775) but the seller disappeared after payment. A number of buyers fell victim to this scam.
The seller built up his ratings and reputation selling cheap bags for a few months before starting this scam. Paypal guaranteed $200 only and return that to me.
As I paid using a credit card, I submitted a chargeback application to get back the balance. My bank returned me the money first while the case is being investigated. Case is still pending. The seller account has been terminated.
Lesson learnt: When buying something from Ebay, make sure that Paypal covers the full cost of the item. If not, clear out the cash your paypal account and pay using credit card. There is no limit to the chargeback you can claim from your bank.

APPLE IPHONE 8GB
Finally got my iphone. I bought 2 from ebay, one 16gb and one 8gb, but the 16gb iphone seller disappeared after I paid (more on that story later). I was previously using a Dopod 810 PDA phone with GPS running Windows Mobile 6. Still can't totally move to the iphone cos the iphone has no GPS. A lot of time was taken getting it to work with the local phone operator with all features enabled. Apple did a good job for its first phone.
Common problems:
- No 3G, GPS
- Got to get used to the SMS text input
- still don't know how to call the number in the SMS view
- can't copy an paste
- not as many 3rd party applications as my WM6 dopod
- can't record videos, take photos only
My favourite things:
- You got an ipod in your phone
- Great screen
- Responsive (except when launching sms application)
- Full browser
- Full youtube access
- Easy multiple mail access
Sony Vaio Dual Core 1.6ghz, 200gb, 2gb, 15.4" LCD
Needed a desktop replacement and always wanted a Sony. Decided to get the cheaper option Vaio VGN-NR240E. Won't be be bri
nging this out much, so the battery hungry dual core cpu won't matter. The 15.4" screen is big enough and displays great photos and movies. You need to upgrade to at least 2gb to run Vista. Fast enough for basic computing work, definitely not for gaming.

This basic model is not quite up there with Apple's designs but their other models are comparable to Apple's, albeit more expensive.
Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite 120gb HDMI
Hooked this up to my 42" Philips LCD 1080i TV and got awesome graphics which much better than Wii. Although Wii is more fun for the family.
The hardware for the Xbox looks more for serious gamers. You should get it online which will let you download demos and short movie clips from the latest games.
